It was a hot summer day in June of 1931 as three boys in their early teens gave up fishing and steered their canoe towards the Virginia shore of the Potomac River. We had not brought any drinking water along, and thirst had driven us to seek out a spring we knew of from previous visits. After beaching our canoe, we began hiking across a cultivated field toward the spring, which flowed from the base of a hill about one-third of a mile away. It wasn't long before I noticed something different on the ground in front of me. When I picked it up, I realized that I had found an arrowhead. I next came upon broken pieces of what my companions told me was Indian pottery. It was like I had been struck by lightning! I was never to be the same, and here I was only 13!
