An Addition to the Plains Rock Art Lexicon

A distinctive type of decorated halter has been identified in Historic period Northwestern Plains rock art. This “rake type” halter decoration appears to represent an artistic rendering of one form of a Black-feet ȁChorse medicine” bundle. Its distribution in rock art suggests that it may be an ethnic identifier for Blackfeet artists, and as such, it adds a significant aspect to the lexicon for Plains Indian biographic art
