Early Prehistoric Killing of Bighorn Sheep in the Southeastern Canadian Rockies

The remains of three bighorn sheep were excavated from early Holocene pond deposits in the Crowsnest Pass, Alberta. The sheep show evidence of patterned disarticulation and butchery. The types of bones recovered suggest the presence of some form of communal hunting and meat sharing. Although sheep were present in the Rockies throughout the Holocene, their remains are scarce from Early Prehistoric sites in Canada. It is suggested that the sheep kill dates to 8500 B.P., based upon a radiocarbon date and a projectile point from the same pond deposit
