Recognition of the presence of prehistoric horticulture in the northeastern Plains is a relatively recent event. Several factors have contributed to the lack of awareness and to the lack of acceptance of native horticulture in this Plains subarea including assumptions about climate and cultural adaptations, and the lack of appropriate recovery and experimental techniques. Archaeological field investigations in the northeastern Plains conducted since 1973 reveal that forager-farmers inhabited this region of the Great Plains by A.D. 1200 raising maize and collecting wild plant foods as a supplement to hunting. Recognition of prehistoric horticulture in this Plains subarea requires a shift in perceptions of the cultural adaptations of this region :S prehistoric inhabitants
