The Bearlodge Mountains of northeast Wyoming contain substantial outcrops of stone that were extensively exploited by prehistoric people. Among these are orthoquartzites from the Lakota and Fall River formations, as well as chalcedonies (including a KRF look-alike) and orthoquartzites from the Morrison formation. The data presented result from a materials-centered study of the lithic resources of the Black Hills National Forest. A predictive model oflithic procurement is suggested based on a resource appraisal assessment. Geological descriptions, the spatial characteristics of lithic resources, and the type and extent of exploitation are discussed, as are the archaeological implications of these factors
