The Wichita language belongs to the Caddoan linguistic family. In the late 1960s, I was privileged to study it with the help of Mrs. Bertha Provost. Among the texts collected as part of that effort is one in which Mrs. Provost and Mr. Houston Miller describe aspects of their traditional culture and beliefs as they heard them from their elders. The topics include creation, games, food sources and preparation, expected behavior, and tools. After presentation of the translation and transcription of the Wichita text, comments on the polysynthetic structure of the language and some of its complex vocabulary illustrate one way in which some tentative conclusions about culture can be drawn from the properties of the language itself. Keywords: Wichitalanguagelinguistic structureethnographic recollectionsCaddoan
