The relationship between personal religiosity and democracy has long been a subject of scholarly and policy debates, particularly in the context of Muslim-majority countries. Over the years scholars have conceptually and empirically unpacked both the independent variable-religiosity-and the dependent variable-democracy. Research on religiosity has progressed from conceptualizing and measuring it as a unidimensional concept to various multidimensional concepts, including dimensions of beliefs, behavior, belonging, and orthodoxy, among others. 1 Increasingly, scholars find that distinct dimensions of religiosity have distinct and sometimes contradictory effects on individuals' political and economic preferences and actions. 2 Finally, these concepts and questions have been investigated in countries from all parts of the globe and professing all the major religions of the world. 3 Despite this substantial progress, most studies still assume that the effects of different dimensions of religiosity stay constant across different temporal and spatial contexts. This is exactly where Hoffman's book, Faith in Numbers, comes in and makes a significant contribution.
