In this paper we review rapidly the contributions of the founding fathers in economics and conclude that their subject matter was social economics, not just narrowly defined economics. Their vision was broader in dimension and richer in content compared to the neoclassi cists and their exhortation is clear: expand, do not reduce the economic vision. We also discuss the role of government in an economic system and recall that the Keynesian paradigm is compatible with an economically active public sector. We note, however, that current declines in produc? tivity and unsatisfactory overall economic performance are leading us away from a meaningful integration of growth policies that also empha? size social issues. In such an environment, the social economist cannot advocate a return to the past nor should he homilize about the grave consequences of antisocial policies. Instead, a creative new approach must be developed within our current social and political system that does not scorn the technical advances of analytical economics
