The article discusses the variety of forms of enslavement of Amerindian peoples in the Modern Period, emphasizing the analytical potential of their study to complexify the concept of slavery itself. With this objective, the authors propose the allegory of a multidirectional gradient of forms of slavery, which, in turn, both fits into and unfolds within a broader multidirectional gradient of labor modalities. Two particular phenomena (“de condição” and “a la usanza” slavery) – geographically distant, but both part of the same historical context (mid-seventeenth century southern Chile and Portuguese Amazonia respectively) – serve as a testing ground and demonstration of the proposal
