A semiarid region of northern Mexico has a very negative water balance because of water overuse in irrigated districts (150 000 ha). Water consumption is one billion cubic meters higher than renewable water yearly. This deficit volume is taken from groundwater provoking a decrease of the water table level, and an enhancement of the pumping cost. Moreover, the quality of pumping water decreases making unsustainable the irrigation of the Laguna region ( 1 million of inhabitants and first milk producer region of Mexico). It is urgent to diminish the volume of water consumption and restore the natural environment of the Nazas river higher basin, which is the main water yield supply
