Since 1890, the production of aluminium has increased dramatically in the Maurienne Valley (Savoy), while the laboratory in Saint-Jean kept improving the electrolytic technique. The stagnation that has been noticeable since about 1960 can be accounted for by the lack of space, the risks of pollution and the price of electric energy. It seems difficult to make up for this lack of dynamism through the expansion of such industries as would on the spot increase the value of foundry ingots, machine-drawn wires or laminated plates. The rather particular case of Hermillon should not be misleading
