For the past 20 years, the development of activities and jobs in the Grenoble region has been similar to that observed at the national scale, reflecting the changing economic situation, a trend towards a greater proportion of jobs in the tertiary sector, and a spatial decentralisation of firms. The specific characteristics of the local economy are, however, worthy of note : a) development driven by the local plants of some large industrial groups and by scientific centres of national and European renown which together make Grenoble a technological pole, with an emphasis on design activities ; b) a spatial development of activities which has been restricted by local geographical factors, resulting in a decrease in jobs in the town centre (even if the public sector has up until now had a moderating effect on this tendency), an increase in activities in the first belt surrounding the centre, and the gradual integration of outside areas into the developing urban region (even if, at the moment, the increase in jobs remains modest in relation to demographic growth). The main issues at the moment concern the disparities within the Grenoble region and the activities which are strategic to regional development
