This article commends the use of research from the perspective of social anthropology for illuminating issues of practical relevance for rural ministry. It considers the similarities and tensions between the work of an Anglican parish priest and that of a social anthropologist. The tensions can in large part be resolved by attention to the time-bound and moral nature of both formation and understanding in either profession
