In 1995, American anthropologist Nancy Scheper-Hughes called for a militant anthropology in which anthropologists, on postulated moral grounds, intervene in the activities and lives of those among whom they do research. Using her fieldwork in South America as a template for her work in South Africa, Scheper-Hughes argued her project as a global one, and as the sole legitimate grounds for anthropological practice. While the dilemmas addressed by Scheper-Hughes are real, and represent significant issues of concern to all anthropologists, the problems created by her proposed solutions and the combination of sociobiological and religious claims on which they are based are themselves problematic. Questions posed by Scheper-Hughes regarding the terms of ethical practice, and the requirements of a ‘good enough’ ethnography, are of critical importance in regard to Scheper-Hughes' own work and activities. This is especially relevant in South Africa as the field and professional locale in which her critique of Anthropology and criticism of anthropologists was set. Insufficient evidence of adequate ethnography, coupled with her ‘womanly centred’ anthropology in South Africa resulted in a maternal colonialism which slid from intervention to interference, and has serious implications for Anthropology
