Mongol Fiscal Administration in Persia

What distinguishes the establishment of Mongol rule in Persia from earlier conquests and dynastic changes during the previous six centuries is the nature of the demographic changes which resulted from it, the growth in the numbers of the nomadic sector of the population and the changes in the relationship between it and the sedentary sector. The effects of the invasion were not felt uniformly in all provinces. Some districts--Anatolia, much of eastern Persia, Gildn, Kirman and Firs-remained for varying periods under local governors. The apparent readiness shown by many of their rulers to cooperate with the Mongol forces is remarkable. Apart from the rulers of Gildn, the Karts of Hardt and the rulers of Ij (Shabdnkira) in Fdrs, these local houses were of Turkoman, Turkish, or Qara Khitay extraction. They were often allied by marriage with the Mongol ruling house. The two regions which I shall consider specifically in this article are Kirmin and Fdrs. The sources for these two
