“The Great Tang Records of the Western Regions”, is a report written by the Buddhist monk Xuan Zang (596?-664) was prepared to be presented to the Chinese Emperor Taizong. After his long journey to India, when Xuan Zang came back to China, has completed his work within a year time. This work consists of 12 chapters; the First and the 12th chapters are on Central Asia. The first chapter bears the title of “34 Countries” and includes the records about Central Asian countries and cities which Xuan Zang personelly visited or had knowledge about on his way to India. The 12th chapter has the name of “22 Countries” and also in this chapter he narrates some other countries which he had visited on his way back to China. He travelled through a vast part of Asia and established relations with many local rulers in Central Asia and India. He even visited Gokturk Khan Tong Yabgu in his marquee. His works made it possible for us to have detailed information on Gokturk Khan Tong Yabgu and his elder son and about some different parts of Central Asian countries. Xuan Zang was a Buddhist pilgrim but in the mean time he was an observer, a traveller, a reporter and a translater. In these two chapters he has depicted the people of Central Asia, foods, art crafts, religion, traditions and political structures in detail. Modern scholars studying in this field by referring to his works and some other related documents about him, could shed light on some diputed subjects. So he and his works are of great importance especially for including first hand information
