Rescue excavations were undertaken to establish a medieval and later pottery sequence in south-west Essex and to trace the extent of early urban occupation to the south of Waltham Abbey. The development of one 16th-century town house was studied with the aid of documentary evidence; at one stage this was in the occupation of a prosperous London mercer and his family. A fine collection of material was found in a brick-built latrine pit postulated to have been filled in 1669 after the indictment of the owner for sodomy, some of the contents of this pit are likened to a meal described by Samuel Pepys
