This paper proposes some principles for a classification of the stone funerary monuments of the Sahara, based on three criteria. 1) five principal families can be defined according to their construction technique ; 2) the monument is then classified according to its geometrical form and 3) its complexity (whether it has annexes or not). These principles allow the classification of all known Saharan funerary monuments, but the problem of their names remains. This question will be discussed in a further paper
