This paper presents the economic and commercial activities and , more particularly , the market places of Nicosia during the Latin and Ottoman domination in Cyprus (13th – 19th centuries ) . I . The first part deals with the Lusignan and Venetian eras (1192-1571 ) and it shows to begin that the market places , under public law , are firmly controlled by the royal power , which makes incomes from their exploitation . The documents bear evidence of the variety of the stalls and of the diversity of the economic activities in Nicosia , but they do not enable to locate these market places on the mésè , the main commercial axis . Beside the markets , other places devoted to trade , storage and retailing (canute , estason , magazenis ) are scattered all over the town . II .
