Malgre une apparence de paradoxe, l'idee que la maniere dont un peintre represente la realite peut influencer notre maniere de voir cette realite est, selon l'A., en grande partie correcte. Il developpe donc la composante active de la representation picturale, examine quelques contre-exemples (lies a la notion de ressemblance : peut-on encore ressembler au portrait d'une autre personne?), et etend son analyse de l'activite artistique a l'activite scientifique
