From a detailed study of an epigraphic list of theatre victors dated to the first half of the third century B. C., in which ‘ old’ dramas are recorded in contest, I formulate the hypothesis that a new contest of ‘ old’ dramas in Athens was instituted in the third century and more precisely at the date 279/ 8. My hypothesis, based on several documentary sources, is that this contest was instituted within the framework of the contests at the Great Dionysia after the victory of the Greeks over the Galatians in 279/ 8, a victory much celebrated by all those who had taken part in it, with honorary decrees, dedications, statues, new festivals and contests
