The presence of the apocryphal literature and the use of the term ‘apocryphal’ in the Golden Legend result from the confluence of two sources that differ because of their origin and their critical attitude: Jean de Mailly’s Abbreviatio in gestis sanctorum is characterized by a very critical approach to the apocryphal literature, while in Barthelemy’s of Trient Liber epilogorum in gesta sanctorum there is a position quite different towards apocrypha and prodigia. In the Golden Legend there is consequently a sort of contamination between two opposite attitudes: Jacobus de Voragine collects prodigious narrations and fables, but, on the other hand, he warns the reader about the untrustworthiness of this literature
