Cette monographie, soigneusement relie et bien prsente, interpelle ds l'abord par le libell de son titre : si l'A. peut affirmer qu'il n'existe aucune monographie rcente qui traite de manire combine de l'art grec et de la religion (p. 1), c'est peut-tre bien que les deux termes choisis ne sont pas les plus vidents utiliser. Le lecteur s'attend ds lors une analyse rflexive de ces deux notions et de leur combinaison. Mais en guise de dfinition de religion , on n'aura se mettre sous la dent que l'ellipse a category more difficult to define (p. 1) -cela dit par contraste avec la mythologie. Le programme annonc est pourtant bien an attempt to rethink the art of Greek religion (p. 2). Religion provides a framework with which to observe and question the art, and the art a venue to better comprehend religious customs and attitudes (prface, p. XI)
