Hunt for the Jews: Betrayal and Murder in German-Occupied Poland is a hallucinatory journey into the cruel logic of the Holocaust. Jan Grabowski’s account of how a handful of Jewish refugees survived the orchestrated hunt for Jews following the Nazi liquidation of Poland’s ghettos in 1942 is reminiscent of Jerzy Kosiński’s The Painted Bird. Kosiński’s 1965 novel tells the story of a Jewish stray boy who struggles to survive during World War II. Wandering about small towns and villages, the boy meets with outright hostility, is harassed and abused, but is rarely sheltered and cared for. While Kosiński’s The Painted Bird was later unmasked as a fraudulent autobiographical and plagiarized work of fiction, Grabowski’s Hunt for the Jews presents an example of outstanding academic writing. Because it is firmly grounded in solid research, Hunt for the Jews demonstrates that some aspects of immanent human reality go beyond human imagination. If the story that it seeks to relate were not so cruel and sad, Hunt for the Jews could definitely be considered a suspenseful page-turner
