IT HAS BECOME QUITE POPULAR TO RIDICULE POSTSTRUCTURALISTS, AND the array of synonymous post-isms or ists -postmoderniste, postMarxists, postfeminists or my favorite epithet -post-toasties -perhaps the most humorous slur-in order to harangue and to highlight the soggy politics and slippery theory generated by all of the above practitioners of what Steven Watts has negatively termed discourse radicalism. Much of the recent flaying of anything connected with poststructuralism has been accompanied by a similar complaint: namely, that the demise of the Left, radical politics, and other related academic sins are somehow connected to the flaky theory emanating from the linguistic twists and turns taken by scholars in such disciplines as literature, history, and American Studies. Unlike the attacks from the Right, this new frontal assault comes from leftist and feminist academics like Steven Watts, Bryan Palmer, and Judith Bennett, who, each in their own way, have raised a series of important criticisms about the recent shifts in the study of gender and discourse. (Here I am referring to the recent essay by Watts published in the December 1991 issue of American Quarterly; Judith Bennett's article in the Autumn
