IN THIS ESSAY I WOULD LIKE TO SUGGEST THAT AN APPROACH TO CULTURE developed by cognitive theorists in cultural anthropology might prove of interest to scholars engaged in historical research.' Certain aspects of this approach would seem potentially useful in the process of formulating and testing theories about historical cultures. My main thesis will be that historians might derive some useful insights from creating simulations of historical documents. But let me begin at another point.
