Margaret M. Scull’s The Catholic Church and the Northern Ireland Troubles, 1968–1998 is an account of the Catholic Church’s role in the Northern Ireland conflict in the three decades from the first civil rights marches in 1968 to the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. It focuses on the church’s political interventions and mediation of violent conflict. Scull does an excellent job, using available church, personal, and national archives, interviewing actors, going through newspapers and pamphlets, with an eye to the wider reach of the Catholic Church and the role of lay people and clergy in the United Kingdom. She contextualizes her work with a good grasp of the extensive social science literature on religion and conflict in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
