In this biographical study, Hiroshi Masuda seeks to show how General Douglas MacArthur's pre–World War II experience in the Philippines and his wartime campaigns influenced his implementation of reforms in Japan during the Allied occupation. In particular, Masuda draws connections between MacArthur's post-liberation policies in the Philippines and the disarmament and liberalization programs he implemented in Japan. Masuda also devotes special attention to what he terms the “Bataan Boys,” the fifteen staff officers who served with MacArthur in the opening campaign of the war in the Philippines and formed his inner circle when the general took command of the Southwest Pacific Theater after his escape from Corregidor Island. This book was originally published in Japanese in 2009, where its scope distinguished it from previous scholarship on MacArthur that concentrated mainly on the occupation years. Unfortunately, most of the material presented here has been covered in earlier English-language biographies of MacArthur.
