Northern Italy, once renowned for producing wine, wool, pigs, and Pliny (75), is a fascinating example of a region conquered by Rome. Initially a province rather than part of Italy, it comes to be a vital bridge between Italy and the empire. It is both a laboratory of Roman imperialism, transformed by Roman colonial intervention, and also the origin of key figures in the shaping of Roman identity, such as Livy and Virgil. This coherent and concise study of northern Italy in the Roman period brings out the complexity of northern Italian history admirably. In Northern Italy in the Roman World: From the Bronze Age to Late Antiquity, Carolynn E. Roncaglia takes an approach both broad in chronological and geographical terms and selective in terms of case studies. Although this involves some compromises, this is sensible given that covering the full history of northern Italy and all its peoples and cities over the whole of antiquity would be impractical.
