Robert Frost has taken on the ambitious challenge of exploring the causes underlying the formation of the political union between Lithuania and Poland (viii) while at the same time seeking to go beyond the framework created by existing, very often nationalist narrations about the Jagiellonian dynasty and its heritage. The Oxford History of Poland-Lithuania, Volume 1: The Making of the Polish-Lithuanian Union, 1385–1569 focuses on political events surrounding the establishment of the personal union of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, as well as the fate of that union up to the moment it took on the form of a political union in 1569. It is intended to serve as a starting point for broader divagations looking at the cultural and civilizational transformations taking place in this interesting region up to the end of the union’s existence in 1795. This subject will be discussed in the upcoming second volume of the publication.
