Christopher M. Tinson’s Radical Intellect: “Liberator” Magazine and Black Activism in the 1960s traces the brief but consequential run of the black radical magazine Liberator, which was published in New York by editor Daniel H. Watts from 1961 to 1971. Critical of the integrationist civil rights mainstream, rooted in black nationalist ideas about culture, community control, aesthetics, and self-defense, and embracing currents of Pan-Africanism, anti-capitalism, and anti-imperialism, the magazine pulled together an ecumenical collection of intellectuals and artists including Lorraine Hansberry and James Baldwin, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach, and John Henrik Clarke and Richard T. Gibson. It provided a critical forum for writers like Harold Cruse, Askia Touré (Ronald Snellings), Larry Neal, Louise Moore, Toni Cade Bambara, and members of the Revolutionary Action Movement (RAM). In doing so, as Tinson observes, Liberator “formed an important nexus of the various strands of black radicalism” as they “converged during the 1960s” and ultimately gave shape to the politics of Black Power and the Black Arts Movement by the end of the decade (4).
