When Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary in May 1915, the city of Trento in the southern Tyrol was one of its key objectives. The patriotic rhetoric of “liberating” the Trentino region retained symbolic value long after the end of the First World War, making the wartime experiences of both city and region a subject of enduring national interest within Italy. An extensive historiography of the local people, the Trentini, and of the war has developed over the past eighty to one hundred years, much of it either falling into a national-patriotic paradigm or taking a “local interest” approach. It is no coincidence that the country’s national museum of war, the Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra, is to be found not in Rome or Milan but in tiny Rovereto in the Trentino.
