Many of today’s scholars of Southeastern Indian history came of age relying on the work of John T. Juricek, now professor emeritus at Emory University. His editorial achievements on colonial Georgia treaties have been invaluable. Juricek’s years of work in Georgia documents resulted in Endgame for Empire: British-Creek Relations in Georgia and Vicinity, 1763–1776, which continues where Juricek’s previous book, Colonial Georgia and the Creeks: Anglo-Indian Diplomacy on the Southern Frontier, 1733–63 (2010), left off. Both books parallel, in chronology and geographic scope, his edited volumes Early American Indian Documents: Treaties and Laws, 1607–1789. Endgame for Empire draws on volume 12, Georgia and Florida Treaties, 1764–1775. In many ways, though, this book is much broader than the title implies. While closely investigating relations between the Creek Indians and the colonies of Georgia and East and West Florida between the end of the French and Indian War and the American Revolution, Juricek’s work must of necessity consider the larger question of British-Indian relations during the critical time period. Much of the study, indeed, looks at efforts by British imperial officials to rewrite Indian policy after the Seven Years’ War, and the abject failure of such endeavors.
