S ummary . This study investigates the influence on children's moral judgment when, in Piagetian tasks, the structure of story‐pairs and the behavioural area are altered. 60 boys, aged 6, 9 and 12, were interviewed using Piaget's clinical method in four areas (lying, stealing, aggression, obedience) with four structures (different intentions, equal small/large consequences; different consequences, equal good/bad intentions). Area and structure both were significant sources of variance: thus, children learn to evaluate bad behaviour before good, and are more likely to give mature responses when consequences are relatively small
