The hypothesis that the von Restorff effect is caused by the isolated (I) item attracting attention, which results in increased recall, was tested on the basis of the assumption that the attention activities are time‐consuming. The variables tested were: presentation time, presentation mode, isolated or non‐isolated sequence, position of the I item, material of the I item and delay between presentation and recall. The results only partly supported the above attention hypothesis, neither could interference theory, based upon acoustic similarity, give a complete account of the findings
