An account is given of a new type of vocabulary scale and its use in some preliminary investigations. The new features include a combination of multiple choice with creative answer technique, relevant self‐assessment by the subjects and a width of range which discriminates effectively among highly educated as well as less educated groups. The results suggest that the scale may provide useful criteria, in both verbal and personality fields
