A comparison of energy consumption in Canada and eight European countries from 1870 to 2000 reveals similarities in the progression from one principal energy source to the next. There are differences in timing of shifts and so differences in the shares of energy sources at any one time. More striking is a dramatic divergence between Canada and the European states in per person energy consumption and in energy intensity. Testing obvious explanations for the diversity prove disappointing. The comparison suggests avenues for further investigation
