The circumstances under which Godfrey de Bouillon was elected to the governance of Jerusalem remain obscure to us, and have been the subject of enduring myths. Even recent writers 1 tell us that he refused a crown of gold where Christ had worn a crown of thorns, although the best source makes it clear that it was his rival, Raymond Count of Toulouse, who took this line on being offered the crown of Jerusalem. 2 The attachment of this story to Godfrey is indicative of the kinds of problems historians have met in trying to find out what title Godfrey took. It is uncontested that the crown of Jerusalem was first offered to Raymond of Toulouse who refused it in the famous terms: there is little doubt that it was given to Godfrey because he had a major following, was willing to stay having little to return to in the west, had offended nobody in the course of an undistinguished career on the crusade, and in its later stages had wisely put himself at the head of the popular clamour to press on to Jerusalem. 3
