In today's political and social climate, the title of the work being reviewed here Jagdworterbuch Russisch-Deutsch (hereafter JRD) may put off some readers. If so, this is a pity, as its author, Irmgard Lorenz, has put together a useful little compilation, with items which will undoubtedly pose a great deal of interest to a variety of readers and prove useful for elucidating obscure terms in literature and specialist texts (p. 9). Tsarist Russia, and subsequently the Soviet Union, used to cover one-sixth of the earth's land surface, stretching from the Arctic almost to the tropics. The wide variety of climatic zones and the terrain encompassed by them suggest that the lexicon related to hunting the local wildlife might be large enough for a dictionary. After all, Russian still serves as a lingua franca for most of the area of the former Soviet Union
