The present volume (volume VII, part I, in The Harvard Series in Ukrainian Studies) contains a reprint of the 1878 publication of Litopys Samovydtsia (The Eyewitness Chronicle), edited by Orest Levytsky;1 a translation of an essay by Mykhailo Hrushevsky, Some Reflections on Ukrainian Historiography of the Eighteenth Century (1934); and a preface by the editor-in-chief of the Harvard Series, Omeljan Pritsak. These various items require separate consideration. The chronicle is an anonymous work describing events in the Ukraine from the outbreak of the Khmelnytsky revolt in 1648 through the year 1702. The arrangement of the material is annalistic. Students of the text have concluded that the author started to write about 1672
