Most national histories are misnamed. This is because they are not the histories of a particular state, as they pretend to be, but rather of the dominant or titular nationality associated with a given state. This essay discusses conceptual problems related to the writing of national histories and then focuses on one-volume histories of three countries: Slovakia, Ukraine, and Poland. The author proposes that national histories should include information about all the nationalities (peoples) who have ever lived within a particular state, and not only the titular nationality
