Twenty years have passed since the appearance of the first small issue of Canadian Slavonic Papers. Twenty-five have passed since the awarding of doctoral degrees in any numbers to Canadian candidates in the Slavic field; and thirty-three since Carleton College and Dalhousie University first offered Russian-language classes. It is now perhaps time to take stock of progress in the field of higher Slavic studies and, by pausing to consider trends over the past few years, to ascertain in what directions these studies are developing in graduate departments of Canadian universities. With this in mind, it seemed appropriate to make this list of theses in the field for which, over the past twenty-five years, doctorates have been conferred in Canada
