The syntactic phenomena discussed in this paper have for the most part not been subjected to a rigorous theoretical treatment, perhaps because they presently constitute poorly understood, and thus described, subsystems in the grammar of Upper sorbian. some of these phenomena are shared with similar processes in other slavic languages, e.g., the “semantic agreement” of possessive adjectives in Upper Sorbian has a parallel in Slovak. In other instances, however, Upper Sorbian seems to have developed unique conditions, e.g., the apparently unrestricted operation of passivization (reflexive vs. participial passive) as opposed to that process in Russian; or the deletability of the auxiliary in the subjunctive or with modals as compared with a similar process in czech. It is hoped that a contrastive-typological investigation of these phenomena will contribute to an understanding not only of the specific Upper Sorbian features within the general grammar of Slavic, but also within universal grammar
