Suppliant and Savior, Student and Teacher

Of the many themes that accompany and elucidate Oedipus' miraculous transformation over the course of the Oedipus at Colonus, the student/teacher paradigm has received comparatively little attention. Nevertheless, the didactic motif plays an important role in communicating the ambiguities of Oedipus' identity while, at the same time, offering an intuitive model of progressive change for the transformation he experiences in this drama. The verb διδάσκω represents a concrete means of tracing this motif. It calls attention to moments where Oedipus' evolving position in Athens is emphasized and clarifies the more complex suppliant/savior motif, which it consistently supplements
