Many countries around the world \nare taking a fresh look at nuclear power. \nAn important cause of what has come \nto be called the global nuclear renaissance \nis the prospect of severe disruptions \nto the earth’s climate brought \nabout by continued increases in greenhouse \ngas emissions, primarily from \nthe combustion of fossil fuels. Nuclear \npower occupies a unique position in \nthe debate over global climate change \nas the only carbon-free energy source \nthat is already contributing to world \nenergy supplies on a large scale and \nthat is also expandable with few inherent \nlimits. These attributes are regularly \nhighlighted by nuclear energy advocates \nand now, increasingly, by some \nformerly anti-nuclear activists, even \nas other environmentalists remain \nstrongly opposed to this technology
