This paper examines and applies the theoretical foundation of the decomposition of agricultural productivity growth to the seven Eastern states of India, which include Eastern UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and West Bengal during the post-millennium period of 2000-2021. A stochastic frontier model with a translog production function is used to decompose the total factor productivity at the district level into effects of technical change (efficiency, technical and allocative), and scale effects. The study also estimates the superlative Törnqvist-Theil Index and Malmquist productivity index using non-parametric Data Envelopment Analysis to check the robustness of our TFP estimates for alternative methodologies and observe a similar trend. Kernel density estimation reveals a shift from unimodal to bimodal distribution of output per worker, indicating regional divergence driven by technical and allocative efficiency changes. Post-2010, frontier expansion accelerated despite continued efficiency decline, widening the gap between potential and realised productivity
