Food subsidy in India has increased substantially over the years amid the rising concerns of farmers regarding viability of farming. This study analyzes the share of farmers in the food subsidy through a simple decomposition model. The study also analyzes the benefits derived by farmers as net buyers or consumers from the present system. The study finds that most of the benefits of the current system of MSP, procurement and public distribution accrue to the consumers, although farmers can derive some benefits as net buyers
