The phenomenon of premature deindustrialization has received considerable attention. There is a commonly held view among Indian scholars and academicians that India has experienced premature deindustrialization, adversely impacting industrial growth. Analyzing trends in the manufacturing share in aggregate economy real GVA and the share of organized manufacturing gross value added (GVA) in state GDP in eight Indian states that account for about two-thirds of manufacturing sector GVA, with the double-deflation procedure applied for measuring real GVA, it is found that premature deindustrialization did not occur in India, at least not in a significant way. As regards manufacturing share in employment in India, there is no indication of premature deindustrialization, though there is sluggishness in structural transformation
