This paper considers the way in which government courts in India have dealt with the conflicts over marine purse seine fishing that have occurred since 2018 and the way these cases develop over time. Purse seine fishing has long caused strife between fisher groups in Tamil Nadu and beyond, which were initially dealt with by informal institutions mainly at the district level (Bavinck 2020). More recently, however, stakeholders have submitted petitions first to the High Court (Madras) and then to the Supreme Court. The paper considers the factors that triggered these court cases and the positions taken by the various parties, including the government of Tamil Nadu. It finally reviews the narratives that underlie these cases and the mix of environmental, developmental, and distributional arguments that they contain. The author argues that the final judgement of the Supreme Court that is now awaited will have major implications for the sustainability of marine fisheries in the country
