Barzakh is a groundbreaking six-episode limited series by Zee Zindagi that bravely delves into the topics of sexuality, gender identity, and the metaphysical realm within the context of South Asia. Set against the cultural and religious backdrop of Pakistan, the series delves into the complexities of live through a family’s journey to self-realization, acceptance and spirituality. It also follows Saifullah, a queer individual portrayed by Fawad M. Khan, who is the elder son in the family, as he navigates societal norms, internalized guilt, and spiritual conflicts. Through mystic elements and symbolic imagery, Saifullah's journey unravels themes of identity, sacrifice, and the liminal space between acceptance and rejection. The series also studies the irreparable damage caused by familial dysfunction, human conditioning, and societal prejudice on personal identity and self-acceptance. Directed by Asim Abbasi, Barzakh not only sheds light on the struggles of queer individuals in conservative societies but also elevates their narrative to one of spiritual and existential significance
